How OSM simplifies answer-sheet checking and moderation
The Eklavvya Onscreen Marking (OSM) system replaces physical answer-sheet handling with a digital workflow. Below is the end-to-end process and where moderation fits in.
Step 1 — Scanning
- The Scanner role scans physical answer booklets at 200+ DPI.
- Scanned images are uploaded into the OSM system.
- Roll number and name regions are automatically masked so evaluators see anonymous booklets.
Step 2 — Booklet assignment
- The Admin or COE assigns booklets to examiners.
- Each examiner receives a quota (e.g. 50 booklets).
- Institutions often upload in batches — it is normal to see fewer booklets than the total quota at first. New booklets arrive over hours or days, with email notifications each time.
Step 3 — Examiner evaluation
- The Examiner logs in with 2FA (Google Authenticator OTP).
- Opens an assigned booklet — the scanned answer sheet pages display on screen.
- Navigates through all pages; each page must be visited and turn green.
- Awards marks using the marking tools or marks N.A. if unattempted.
- Marks blank pages with the Cross / Blank icon — otherwise the page won't turn green.
- Adds annotations (tick, cross, comments) as required.
- When every page is green, the Finish Paper Checking button enables.
- Click Finish Paper Checking to submit. The next booklet loads automatically.
Step 4 — Moderation (where two examiners disagree)
For booklets evaluated by two examiners, the Moderator sees both marks side-by-side and consolidates them:
- Open the question in the moderator view — both examiners' marks are visible.
- Review the answer and both awarded marks.
- Enter the final consolidated mark in the moderator mark field.
- Click Save.
Step 5 — Re-evaluation (if requested)
If a candidate requests re-evaluation, the Re-Evaluator opens the original booklet and re-assesses. Original marks remain visible for audit.
Step 6 — Result publishing
The Admin reviews aggregate marks, exports topic-wise and individual reports, and publishes results to candidates.
Why this is simpler than physical evaluation
- No physical handling of booklets — fewer logistics, no lost sheets.
- Identity masking is automatic — no manual cover-up of names.
- Auto-save means a browser crash never loses work.
- The Faculty Dashboard tracks every examiner's progress in real time.
- Moderator mark consolidation is one click, not a back-and-forth with paper records.
