Taking a Skill Assessment (candidate guide)
For: candidates
A Skill Assessment may ask you to type, choose options, record audio or video, or talk with an AI bot. Read this before you start — especially the keyboard rule below.
Before you start
- Use a laptop or desktop with the latest Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (recording is not supported in some other browsers).
- Check your webcam and microphone: see System Check, webcam and microphone setup.
- Close other apps and tabs, and sit somewhere quiet for spoken answers.
Important: do not press Ctrl or Cmd
Once the assessment timer starts, pressing Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) — on its own or as part of any shortcut — or trying to copy, cut or paste, is treated as a security violation. You are immediately taken out of the assessment to the Resume page and the event is logged.
- Right-click and long-press are blocked.
- The assessment runs in full screen. If you leave full screen, click Resume in fullscreen to continue.
- Do not switch windows or tabs. Repeated window switching can terminate the assessment.
If you are taken to the Resume page, your answers and remaining time are saved. Click Resume Test to go back in, or Go To Assigned Test to return to your exam list.
The assessment screen
- Top bar: exam timer, section timer, time left on the current question, proctor link and network status, warnings, Instructions.
- Case study: some questions have a case study panel. Use Hide case study / Show case study, Collapse question, or Side-by-side view to arrange the screen.
- Question palette (when navigation is allowed): shows Answered, Not answered, Answered + marked for review, and Review only.
- Buttons: Previous, Save & next, Mark for review, Calculator (if allowed), Submit test.
- Sections: if the assessment has sections, you may be asked to confirm before moving to another section; some assessments do not let you return to an earlier section.
How to answer each question type
| Type | What to do |
|---|---|
| Multiple choice | Select one option, or several if the question allows multiple answers. |
| Text | Type in the answer box. Watch the word limit if one is shown. Some questions also offer Answer by voice, which converts your speech to text. |
| Audio / video | Click Start recording, answer, then stop. Wait until you see Recorded and uploaded before moving on. If the question says One recording only, you cannot re-record. |
| Conversation | The AI bot speaks first; reply out loud. The conversation runs for a set number of turns. |
If a recording fails, you will see "The recording could not be uploaded. Please record again." Check your connection and record again.
Submitting
- Click Submit test.
- Confirm in the Submit assessment? dialog (or click Continue assessment to go back).
- The Assessment complete page may ask for short feedback. Answer at least one question and click Submit feedback.
Whether you see your score immediately depends on your institute's settings. Skill-based results may take longer because some answers are reviewed by an evaluator.
Troubleshooting
"Recording is not supported by this browser." Switch to Chrome or Edge.
"No recording was captured." Allow microphone / camera access for the site and try again.
I pressed Ctrl by mistake. Click Resume Test on the Resume page. If it does not let you in, contact your institute or proctor.
Still stuck? Email [email protected] with your roll number, the assessment name and a screenshot. If your exam is running, contact your institute or proctor first.
