Can I take an Eklavvya exam on a MacBook?
For: candidates
Short answer: Yes. Use the latest Google Chrome on macOS and give Chrome permission to use the camera, microphone and (for screen-sharing exams) screen recording. Do not use Safari.
Requirements
- macOS: keep it updated (Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update).
- Browser: latest Google Chrome. Microsoft Edge also works unless your institute allows Chrome only — in that case other browsers show Open only through Google Chrome. at login.
- Webcam & microphone: built-in is fine.
- Internet: a stable connection. See supported devices, browsers and internet.
- The Secure Exam App is Windows-only. If your institute uses it, you need a Windows laptop or desktop.
Setup before the exam
- Allow Chrome to use the camera. Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → tick Google Chrome.
- Allow Chrome to use the microphone. Same panel → Microphone → tick Google Chrome.
- Screen-sharing exams only: Privacy & Security → Screen Recording → tick Google Chrome.
- Quit Chrome completely (Cmd + Q) and reopen it. macOS applies these permissions only after a full restart of the browser — a reload is not enough.
- In Chrome, click the lock icon in the address bar on the exam site and set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
- Set time to automatic: System Settings → General → Date & Time → turn on “Set time and time zone automatically”.
- Close other apps that use the camera (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, Photo Booth).
- Run the System Check. When sharing your screen, choose Entire Screen.
Cmd key warning
- In a normal exam, the Cmd key and shortcuts like Cmd+C / Cmd+V are blocked and show a short warning.
- In a Skill Assessment, pressing Cmd, Ctrl or any shortcut is logged as a security violation and immediately exits the test to the Resume page. Keep your hands off the Cmd key. See Taking a Skill Assessment.
If the camera shows a black screen
- Quit Chrome completely (Cmd + Q).
- Reopen Chrome and the exam link.
- If still black: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera, untick Chrome, tick it again, restart Chrome.
- If you use an external webcam, unplug it and plug it into a different USB port.
- Use the Webcam Troubleshooting link on your dashboard to test the camera and microphone.
If screen sharing isn't working
- System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording → make sure Chrome is ticked.
- Fully quit the browser with Cmd + Q.
- Reopen and re-enter the exam. In the sharing dialog choose Entire Screen — a window or a tab is not accepted.
iPad or iPhone
iPhone security restrictions can block or limit the camera during exams, and Safari can have display problems. Where possible use a Mac or Windows laptop (or an Android phone) instead. Check your institute's instructions for which devices are allowed.
