How to define a timer for each question in an online exam
For: admins
A per-question timer gives every question its own countdown. When the time runs out, the exam moves to the next question automatically. There are three kinds of timing in Eklavvya:
| Timing | Where to set it |
|---|---|
| Same time for every question | Exam Creation > Question Type tab > Separate timer for each question (this article) |
| Time per section | Advanced Configuration > Section tab — see Section-wise exams |
| Different time per question (Skill Assessment) | Time limit on each question in the Question Builder — see Skill Assessment creation |
Steps (normal exams)
- Go to Exam Management > Exam Creation and click New Exam (or edit an exam that is not in use).
- In General settings, open the Question Type tab.
- Set Separate timer for each question to Yes.
- Enter Time per question in seconds.
- Continue to Select subjects and generate or update the exam.
Note: when the per-question timer is on, Allow question navigation (Advanced tab) is automatically set to No and locked — candidates answer questions in sequence and cannot go back.
Candidate experience
- A countdown for the current question is shown in minutes and seconds.
- When it reaches zero, the answer is saved and the next question opens.
- When time runs out on the last question, the exam is submitted.
Skill Assessments
In Skill Assessment, each question has its own Time limit (minutes, 0 = no limit) set in the Question Builder. Switch on Allow Time Per Question in the assessment's Delivery settings to enforce it. Question times roll up into section and assessment totals.
FAQ
Why is Allow question navigation greyed out? The separate per-question timer is on. Set it to No to allow navigation again.
Can I edit the timer after scheduling? The Edit icon is disabled while the exam is in use (for example, it has an active schedule). See How to create and manage exams.
