How to create Fill in the Blank questions

For: admins and question authors

A Fill in the Blank question shows the candidate an input box in place of each blank. It is an objective question type, so it is auto-evaluated.

Rules at a glance

  • Mark a blank by typing at least two underscores with no space (__) in the question text.
  • At least one and at most five blanks per question.
  • Enter the correct answer for each blank in the answer option fields, in the same order as the blanks.
  • Each blank can carry its own marks and a negative-marks percentage.

Steps

  1. Go to Question Bank > Objective Questions and click New.
  2. On the Create Objective tab, select Subject, Topic and Difficulty Level, and choose the Fill in the Blank question type (listed as FILL IN BLANKS).
  3. In Text Question, type the question with __ for each blank. Example: The capital of France is __ and it lies on the river __.
If the blanks are missing or there are more than five, the form shows "Minimum one place is required..." or "Maximum five places are allowed...".
  4. Open the Answer Options tab. Weightage of each answer option is switched on automatically and one option row appears for each blank.
  5. For each blank, enter the correct answer in the option text, its Marks, and (optionally) the Negative Marks %. The question's total marks are read-only and follow the option marks.
  6. Save. If any blank has no answer, you will see "Fill in the blanks needs to provide all answers."

What the candidate sees

The question text with an input box at each blank. The candidate types the answer into each box.

Bulk import

Fill in the Blank questions can also be imported through the objective-question Excel import (Question Bank > Import Data). See How to import exam / assessment data.

Changed an answer after the exam?

If you correct an answer key after candidates have taken the exam, run Regenerate Result for that exam so scores are recalculated.
